WASHINGTON – The nonpartisan, nonprofit Partnership for Public Service today released the following statement from President and CEO Max Stier, in response to the failure to pass appropriations for roughly 70% of the federal government before the midnight deadline:
“Tonight’s partial government shutdown is yet another example of a deeply broken appropriations process. Any government shutdown, even a brief one, has significant impacts on agencies and the public. And that doesn’t even address the last six months of shutdown threats, each of which required intense planning and preparation across government, nor the fact that our government has had to operate for so long under multiple continuing resolutions, which significantly limit the ability of civil servants to deliver best outcomes to the public.
“Congress must work to end this shutdown as quickly as possible. While it is encouraging that an agreement to fund government through the rest of the fiscal year looks likely, it is far from a cause for celebration. This should have been done months ago. We should expect our elected leaders to fulfill this basic duty to fund the government in a timely fashion. The public deserves nothing less.”
